Jenny X. 19, HackMIT organizer, and I hacking hard or hardly hacking?   On top of that, somehow hundreds of companies are recruiting on campus right now. Its only been less than a few weeks into school, and Ive attended dozens upon dozens info sessions, coffee chats, and tech talks. So many of them conflict with one another and with my classes I dont even know what to do or where to go anymore. At one point, I had info session on my calendar, and couldnt even figure out which company it was. Im now at the point where I need todo lists to keep track of my todo lists. A peek into my week. Friday was also the annual Fall Career Fair. Almost 300 companies attended, and I had 35 or so companies on my hot list. I made my rounds through all 3 floors of the fair from 10:20am to 4pm straight, with no break, and still didnt get through all the companies I wanted to talk to. Also need to find time this weekend to send in my applications online as well, and sort through all the companies I talked to. Its interview season as well at some point Ill need to dig out Cracking the Coding Interview. I purchased it back as a freshman, yet, come junior year, still have yet to read through it. Tonight sounds like a good night to start. My roommate and I pausing for a shot before Career Fair. And my emails are spammed with flyers for events and networking and info sessions and other recruiting events and talks and this and that and I cant even keep track of whats important in my inbox anymore. For every email I process, 10 more seem to pop up out of nowhere. No kidding. Inbox currently at over 51k emails. Disclaimer: I do forward and keep the important ones in my personal Gmail account. The first few weeks of the semester, though, are always a great time to catch up with friends that I havent seen since Spring semester, and learn about all the wonderful things that theyve done over the summer and the classes theyre taking this fall. He was born on 5th June 1945. He was a professional football player and a field athlete. In the 1968 Summer Olympics, he won the bronze medal in a sensational two hundred meters race. When receiving the medal, he stirred a political controversy with Tommie Smith when they did the Black Power Salute. Tommie Smith was the Olympic gold winner in the race. Later on his career, John Carlos managed to improve world records in 200 meters and 100-yard races. However, with all his athletic achievements, Carlos is still mostly remembered for the Black Salute gesture on the podium in 1968. The gesture was a political gesture against the racial segregation, it empowered communities to stand up for their rights going forward.On the podium, both of the athletes raised one hand gloved fist as the American national anthem was being played. Peter Norman the silver meda l winner in the race from Australia also wore a human rights badge (Carlos Zirin 79). Therefore, the impact of the actions by John Carlos and Tommie Smith was already being felt at the stadium. In addition, Tommie Smith had a black scarf on his neck as a representation of black pride (Bass 58). On his part, Carlos, did not zip his tracksuit as a gesture of solidarity with the black blue collar workers in America. He also wore a necklace made of beads in solidarity with the families of people who were killed and lynched in the struggle for equality in all parts of the world. According to Carlos, the Olympics platform is organized as a symbol of unity but the plight of minorities was not highlighted throughout the games. Therefore, his actions were a wakeup call to organizers and the whole world in general on the importance of equality.In response, the International Olympic Committee did not deem the gestures by the athlete as fit for the occasion. Avery Brundage, the President of the Olympic Committee at the time, said the protest by the athletes was a domestic political issue. The Committee said that an Olympic platform is a global event and it was not right to address an American domestic issue. In that regard, the Committee President ordered that Carlos and Smith should be suspended from the America team all Olympic related activities.
